Kids in Californian Schools

On BtN this week, there was a story about Californian schools. Now I know you have seen TV shows and movies about how they live ,go to school and other things, but have you ever wondered if they really live like that?

Some things that we see on TV shows are still the same, like Cheerleading, free dress when they go to school, dining halls and school lunches so if you thought that it was the same, you are mostly right. Also NFL , Basketball and Baseball are a pretty important sport over there.

We know about American film stars and their important people, but do they know about us? The reporter asked them some questions about Australia but surprisingly, they don’t have a clue about us! They don’t even know people like Steve Irwin, Hugh Jackman or even Heath Ledger!

California is the movie state, so you can see celebrities everywhere. You can see the stars everywhere, from the local coffee shop to the shopping mall, or even the movies themselves! The biggest place to see celebrities is Beverly Hills, where some of the celebrities live. Wouldn’t it be cool to see stars like Brad Pitt, Lily Allen and Angelina Jolie?

Their school lifestyle is different to ours; they buy their lunches, then sit down in a big dining hall and eat their lunch, which is different to our school. They don’t have recess; they have nutrition which is a break where they get whatever they want.

So basically life in a Californian school is life our school.

Refugee Tennis Lessons!

The story on BtN today was Aruf Ahmadi from Afghanistan. When  Aruf was 14 he was walking on the beach when he noticed some boys playing tennis. So he walked over and started playing the game… but what was the game, well it was tennis.

But this was hard to get really involved in tennis because Aruf and his family are refugees. Refugees are people who have come from a country that has come from a country that is in a war, something bad has happened there, like an earthquake. It would be hard. You would have to learn a different language, different laws and different schools.

So one day when Aruf got home and the strings were broken on his racquet and when he put it down and walked off his mum picked it up and thought  it couldn’t be repaired so she picked it up and threw it in the bin. But she didn’t know that it was a tennis racquet and the strings could be replaced.

Now Aruf is 18 and has started multicultural tennis lessons for refugee kids. The lessons are not just for learning the basics of tennis but make new friends and start to rebuild the kid’s lives.

There are two kids that go to the lessons and their names are Achok and Maketh. They are very competitive and they come from Sudan. There are many competitive kids there and they all have stared to become good at tennis

This story makes me feel happy in a way because the kids will get to make new friends and a better life.

East Coast Floods

The recent flooding in Southern Queensland has left many people stranded, towns marooned, farms demolished, wildlife habitats ruined and riverbanks overrun and overflowing. The governer of Queensland has recently that Queensland’s worst drought in history is offcially over.

As many people drove to safety centers the floods moved south to southern NSW and the same bad thing happened, maybe even worse

The good thing is, is that Queensland`s Dam level are nearly full or maybe even full.

The damage bill will probably come to millions of dollars and looks like it will come out of the government’s budget. This flood will take a long time to repair all the damage.

In the country parts where the drought is, the flood has hit and now the plants are growing and the grass is flurishing again.

So the floods have brought good things and bad things.

Acid Ocean

Did you know that the Great Barrier Reef is on of the wonders of the natural world? But now scientists are concerned. Why are they concerned it’s because the carbolic acid is getting stronger and stronger because of the air pollution. People are leaving lights on leaving TV’s and irons on and most of all the cars that you drive they pollute and we burn fuel fossils to power things and we pollute the air so much  and that is why scientists are concerned about the Great Barrier Reef it is because of air pollution.

The carbon-dioxide in the air affects the sea and makes the carbolic acid stronger. But why should we worry? It’s because when carbolic acid touches coral the coral disintegrates instantly. So if there is no coral the krill that eat the coral will die and the whales that eat the krill will starve. So if the coral disintegrates the whole food chain will be affected.

The other thing that the coral disintegrating will affect is the tourism. If the Great Barrier Reef is gone the tourism in Queensland will be adversely affected and also the small businesses that rely on tourism for instance a small café that relies on travellers will lose their jobs.

So if the coral starts to disintegrate both tourism and sea life alike will die down. So stop wasting electricity and save so you will not kill the Great Barrier Reef.

Australia’s “Are You Fire Ready” Plan

When you think about it, do you have a Fire plan? Well if you don’t what would you do if a fire is coming towards you? Would you stay and fight, or would you leave immediately with your special belongings and drive away in your car? Well in most countries you would have to leave immediately but in Australia you have a choice. I think it is silly because if everyone stays and fights like some people do, there will be a high number of people killed like we saw on Black Saturday.

Black Saturday has proven the point that if you stay and fight; well let’s just say that it was their final hour. If people stay and fight there will be a continued rise of people killed. If people leave early and flee then not many people will get killed. The only bad thing about leaving is that if people leave prized possessions will be destroyed of if they survived be in charred remains. On the other side people would want to fight the fire because maybe they grew up in that house or would fight it because it would take ages to rebuild their lives, houses and would lose possesins that are dear to them.

Sri Lankan Cricket Attack

Last Tuesday in Lahore, Pakistan, there was a terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team.  Some of the police assigned to protect the teams and some officials were killed, and others – including some members of the Sri Lankan national team were injured.  Many people around the world are speechless about why such a thing happened.

I will tell you why I think it happened. It is because the terrorists do terrible things to attract attention to make people believe in their cause, for example religious, national or political. Rebelling against things that they don’t like or just simply wanting to have power or control. Some people say that it is because there is a war going on in a neighbouring country (Afghanistan) but I think it’s also because they’re just selfish and not tolerant of others and want everything their way.

Because of this action, cricket will not be played in Pakistan for quite a while which has left all fans heartbroken and disappointed and the  cricket fans in Pakistan very, very embarrassed. Some people still think that Pakistan could co-host the Cricket World Cup but they would have to have very tight security and it would be a very big risk to fans, players, officials and locals alike.

So what do you think?  Play cricket straight away again in Pakistan, or stop for a couple of years?  I think that they should wait a couple of years until it calms down a bit in Pakistan and then start to play again, but some may say that is giving into the terrorists. This may be true to a certain extent, but we can’t take risks with the safety of so many people. Please leave a reply saying what you think should happen about this terrible thing.

Orangutans Rock!!!!!!!!!!

Some people have started to think that Orang-utans have started to go extinct. The reason for this is because people are cutting down the trees that the Orang-utans live in and using them for palm oil for foods like . You might not know but we eat palm oil in most things. Do you want to know why? Well it’s because the people who package it hide it as vegetable oil.

The effect on the Orang-utans is horrific, the Orang-utan population is slowly getting smaller and smaller. Some of the Orangutans don’t get killed by the loss of trees but the trees falling down on them!!!

But the problem is that some people have made a living out of cutting down the trees, so if they have to quit their jobs they will go bankrupt and have to find a good job quickly or else they will have no job and have to live on the streets.

I think the solution is that the people should cut the trees down but leave enough for the Orangutangs can live

Schoolies Week!!!

Every year, when the year twevles finish school they usually go up to the gold coast and party for 5 days. It would be fun but usually some people drink to much, start a fight, then go to jail.

Some people chose not to go partying, but decided to go to East Timor. There the schoolies help the Timorese rebuild their lives by helping plant trees, giving them electrizity and helping them transport water.

I think this was a very good idea because the schoolies kids could have been partying and hanging out with their mates but they were helping rebuild a nation.

I think that when I grow up I and am in year 12 I might go to East Timor and help the people there. The Schoolies therehelped to rebuild peoples lives.
