Code Red

On Saturday 7th of February, Victoria was hit with terrible bushfires. Saturday was classified as an Extreme Fire Danger Day, It wasn’t an Extreme Fire Danger Day it was a Catastrophic Fire Danger Day. This why they have put a new fire system in place.

The new system is managed by the weather beuro they decide on the rating. The levels are Low, Moderate, High, Very High, Extreme and Catastrophic ( CODE RED). On CODE RED Days people are encuraged to leave their homes the night before or early that morning. To decide on the rating they take into consideration the heat, the humidity, the wind and how dry the ground is.

On CODE RED Days schools are closed depending on where they are. Most schools are closed because of the danger and then if it is a CODE RED Day you are supposed to be out of there anyway. Some students believe that it would be safer at school in the city surronded by people. Parents aren’t to happy because they have to take the day off work to care for their child.

Do you think this new system will work once we all get used to it?

Sea Rescue

Have you ever lost your parents in a major shopping centre? Imagine that feeling but a million times worse. This is how sailors that are lost at sea or stuck in a freak storm must feel. Except this time you can’t go to the front desk and ask them to call your parents to collect you. You are stuck until someone comes to rescue you. Most countries have agreed that if they find a sailor or boat in distress they will rescue them.

Around each country there is an area that it is that countries area to be responsible for. The areas that aren’t anyones are called International waters so anyone can be there and anyone can rescue anyone. When the Titanic was going down the Carpathia came and rescued many of the passengers. If a boat comes near a troubled boat or sailor they are required to help them.

When you are rescued you are usally taken to the nearest port. When it is a boat full of Asylum seekers should it be taken to the country it came from or the country it’s heading to?  That is why the Asylum seekers who were on a boat in the ocean in Indonesian waters are where they were found.

I think Ayslum seekers that are found in Indonesian waters should be returned to Indonesia until the Governments come to an agreement on what to do with the people on board.

What do you they should do with the Ayslum seekers?

Junk Food Ads

Recently, There has been a massive debate over whether or not advertising junk food in the middle of childrens shows should be banned. Many people believe that this is majorly effecting the increasing rate of obesity. Did you know that 3 in 10 people are overweight or obese.

If they keep advertising junk food when kids are watching T.V because they will get in a bad habit and stay overweight. This can cause heart disease, Diabeties and cancer.

Australian Cummunications and Media Authorities (ACMA) have decided to keep showing the ads in the middle of childrens shows. Though they have  limits the way they use famous people and cartoon characters to sell junk food.

But the Health Authorities want it banned all together ACMA have no proof that the ads are contributing to the increasing rate of obesity.

Health organisations are fighting to stop all advertising of junk food from 6pm to 9pm every night of the week.

When the ads come on the T.V we can all go ‘yum, yum, yum’  but in the end it is up to our parents to say whether we can eat it or not. So the ads aren’t increasing the rate of obesity if anyone is it would be your parents.

This is my opinion.

What’s yours?

Hospital Art

Hospital Art is just like any other art.  The only thing different about it is instead of putting it on the fridge or on the wall it is put up in Hospitals. The Operation Art Project is art by kids for kids.

The children entered in the compettition have and either or friends in hospital or have been in hospital themselves. One child entered the compettition had been in hospital and his sister had cancer.

It’s a fantastic idea to have artwork in the childrens ward. If you have ever been in hospital to visit or because you’ve been unwell you will know how boring it is. All the walls are white and it’s gloomy. It would so much happier if there was some colour around. Artwork makes people happy because it brings colour to the rooms instead of te children looking at a plan wall 24-7

It’s suprising how much of a difference artwork can make.

Uluru Uproar

Uluru, What an amazing place. Though I have never been there I know people who have and they have said it was amazing.
Uluru, is located in Central  Australia and is an Indigenous land mark and as Australians we are lucky to be able to call this rock form ‘ours.’
But recently there had been controvousy over Uluru. As the Australian public and tourists are climbing the rock form. This is making the Indigenous people angry as Uluru ‘belongs to them.’ Uluru carries a significate place in their hearts. It has a lot of meaning to them. They feel as if people climbing Uluru and ruining it and are disrespecting the Indigenous community.
Not all tourists choose to climb Uluru. Some look at it some walk around it not up it. But some people choose to climb it. There is a debate whether to ban people from climbing Uluru or leave it open to the public so those who wat to climb it can.
Everyone has a say but in the end the Government make the final decision.
Uluru is such a massive tourist attraction closing it could have a massive effect on those who make their money by running a business there. This is especially bad in the current ecomonic crisis.
The more we hear about this story the more we learn about Uluru and the way things work there. Aswell as the Indigenous people wanting climbing Uluru banned the also might have to take into consideration that 35 people have died attemping to climb Uluru.
Personally I think it shouldn’t be banned. It should just be recommended not to climb it, so people can make their own decision on whether or not they think it is a good idea or a bad idea instead of being told it’s a bad idea.
What do you think??

Swine Flu

Swine Flu. Well, Isn’t that a word we’re familiar with.
Swine Flu is now well known all around the world. Most countries have at least 1 person with the disease. Swine Flu is a mixture of Pig flu, Human flu and bird flu. H1N1 influenza also known as swine flu has cause panic around the world. Everyon is fearing the worst. Swine flu originally came from a pig farm in Mexico transfered to a human then from human to human ever since. Some scientists ae saying that we are over reacting and that it’s like any other flu. There are also new fears that now that it’s coming into winter swine flu will mix with the normal human flu and this will make it worse.
If you are unlucky enough to get swine flu you will be quarintined. When you are Quarintined  you are not allowed to make contact with others. Due to the outbreak of Swine flu some schools have been closed due to a student getting the disease. So other students that attend the school have been told to take a week of school and stay at home to try and stop the spend of Swine Flu.
Hopefully Swine Flu leaves us alone and doesn’t claim any Australian lives.

Acid Oceans

We are all aware of Global Warning but now there is another problem. This problem involes Queensland’s Great Barrier Reef. I’ll explain. Well, more carbondioxide is being emmited into the air and flying around. Then when we gat rough seas and massive waves and the waves come up so far out of the water the corbon dioxide in the air gets collected and trapped by the waves and gets dragged into the open waters. Gradually this acid will reach The Great Barrier Reef, and scientists are are afraid that if the acids keeps getting collected it will become so strong that the coral will just dissolve.
We are getting more Carbonic Acid in the water than ever before. This is because we are making so many toxic emissions. This is also what is causings Global Warning. So if we stop creating a toxic atmosphere we can help Global Warning and the Great Barrier Reef.
As we all knowThe Great Barrier Reef is one of Australia’s great tourist attractions. If all the coral gets ruined because of the Acid increase in the water not as many people will visit Australia and the Great Barrier Reef. This will cause all the people that run charters and show people around the Great Barrier Reef will go out of buisness and then their employees will lose their jobs and won’t have anough money to spend in shops which will cause them to go out of buisness. But thats another story. The Great Barrier Reef is a fantastic place and one of the seven natural wonders of the world. It would be devastating to everyone and we will have to live with the fact that it was our emissions that did this.

Archibald Prize

The Archibald Prize is an event held yearly. Anyone can enter as long as you draw someone famous you could win. The Archibald Prize is an event were anyone can have a  piece of artwork entered into the show. You have to be in it to win it. The event is a great way to kick off a young persons career as an atrist.
The artwork entered has to be a picture of a famous person but it can be drawn, painted or coloured with pastel or anything. It can be detailed or abstract big or small. This year someone entered a picture of the Bananas in Pyjamas and it caused lots of controvursy  and got desquilified for the compettion. This got mixed feedback because technocally they are famous people so they should be allowed  to enter.
Many people enter this compettition year after year. They artist involed are all different ages and different styles of artwork and abilities. It is amazing the type of  artwork entered and how many different styles of art used in different ways but they are all on the same topic.
If you think you are an artist then enter the Archibald Prize art competition.

Bushfire Recovery

Three weeks after the terrible Black Saturday Bushfires which caused masses of devastation to everyone in Victoria even if there wasn’t a fire in their community, the people that it actually happened to are trying to get back into their normal routine.
Students at the Kinglake West Primary School have just started back at their own school after being at a different school since the fires hit. Amazingly ,while the rest of the town was black and not there the school was still there and the students said they can look out the window and it’s green. Even though they have only been back for a day they are enjoying being back at school and seeing their friends. Being back at school is a good distraction from everything that has happened. They all have their very own fire stories.
As well as having their school back they have  temporary homes even if its not theirs at least they have a roof over their heads. But they are sleeping in beds and they have toys for one reason and that is because of generous families. They may have one or two things of their own or they may have none. This depends on how lucky they were or how bad their town was hit with the fire.
Not only have humans lost their homes and communities but so have animals. Many animals have been taken into carers and to sanctuaryiessuch as Healsville Sanctuary to be cared for. The main reason animals were brought in was because they had burnt feet or paws. It may takes years for the animals’ homes to be repaired and it may take years for humans too.
But it must be nice to know that there is hope and that we are all thinking of you. There couldn’t be anything worse than what Victoria has experienced in the start of this year.

Schoolies Week

Ding Ding Ding goes the school bell on the last day of the year forever(for the year 12′s.) Most people go away for the week with their friends and party hard. They go the rock concerts and get heavily drunk this is called schoolies. All this parting and drinking usally causes the graduates to get into trouble with the law.
There were a group of ex year 12′s that decided not to go to schoolies and instead to go to East Timor and help out there. One of the girls had never been on a plane. Her dad was quite worried but when he heard what they were doing he decided that because he was an electrician he would go along and help. The girls had to save up their own money to get to East Timor and to use once they get there. They all thought that going to Timor would be a way better oppurtunity and a better thing to do with their time rather than going to schoolies.
This was an amazing thing to do. It will be something they can tell their family and friends that instead of going to schoolies the went to East Timor an helped alot of people in their communities. The group of girls should be extremely proud of themselves. It was an amazing thing to do.
        Great job!!
