Sports funding

This morning on BTN there was a story about how the government is funding olympic sports a lot of money every year.

I wasn’t alive back then but in 1976 at montreal the Australians won 0 medals and it wasn’t till after that when the government built the Australian Instatute of Sport. Today 80% of our taxes goes to sports funding. 60 million of that goes to the olympic commitie and 20% goes towards the much less funded footy, cricket, basketball and ect. The argument of this story is that really popular sports that aren’t in the olympics are only getting a small portion of our taxes. The money for the olympics gets spent on accomadating the olympians and to supply them with training grounds back in Australia.

Many people think that if you have a big sporting event held somewhere in your country it will incourage more people to play that perticular sport. It is so important to recieve olympic medals because the more popular we are the more the population increases

movie making

This week on BTN one of the stories was about middle school kids from Newman in Western Australia making films. Newman is a very isolated and remote town. These films could be about anything from adventure to horror.

There is a large group of children who got together one day and decided to make a movie. One of the groups made a story about a pirate adventure. Lots of kids have learnt new skills about making movies like lighting, shade and for some even working a camera! Many of the kids are presenting their work at the Newman film festival and maybe for the really good ones the Australian     short film awards. Some kids involved in this project feel a bit isolated because their town is so far away from any other. This project helps them to branch out all over Australia with their films.

This project has changed people’s lives because it helps kids to interact with other kids making movies and adults giving them advice to make bigger and better movies. This story made me feel like kids can do anything that they put their minds to no matter how big or small.

Remembrance Day

This story is about how dogs went over with the troopers and fought in the war. They were used to sniff out the enemy and detect bombs or land mines. They sent over dogs, cats, horses, monkeys and birds.

Remembrance Day commemorates all the people who fought and died in the war for our freedom. All animals had different jobs on the battlefield. For example horses had to carry heavy loads, pigeons carried messages over really long distances and more importantly dogs could detect deadly bombs or the enemy. Glow worms were used as lights at night so they could read things such as maps, or see where they were going. It is to be said that pigeons have saved many thousands of lives by flying messages to generals that tell them to stop fighting or where to go to be evacuated. Animals get rewarded too. There is a medal called the Dicken Medal witch rewards animals for their bravery. The highest level of medal for a person is the Victoria Cross which is a very prestigious award.
There is a story about a cat named Simon and he was captured by the Japanese and was on a boat for 100 days and caught rats to protect the Australian hostages’ food supply. Personally I don’t think animals should be allowed to fight because they don’t get a choice to fight.

Junk Food Ads

BTN this week is about kids television being invaded by junk food ad’s. The main point of the story is about how Hungry Jack’s, Mcdonalds and KFC are showing to much ad’s on kids television.
Some health authorities want to ban junk food ad’s because little kids who watch cartoons, see the ad’s and want to buy their because it has a toy in it or somekind of gimmic in the product. Unfortunatally there is a down side to all that yummy food, people who eat to much junk food can get obese and when you are fat you can get heart diasese, cancer and diabetes. The Australian Communication & Media Authority are a group of people that manage the amount of junk food ad’s there are on t.v. ACMA have recomended to show no junk food ad’s during “C” rated programs because little kids will get a taste of Mcdonalds and eventually thay will have it everyday untill they can’t eat anymore. Personally i don’t think they should ban junk food ad’s because it’s perants faults when the drive them there

Queensland Flood

Over the last week in North New South Wales and South Queensland there have been some very bad floods. These are not just not any normal floods they broke all the Queenslands floods that have been going on for many years.

Some negative effects that the floods have on Queensland are that most people are trapped some where and that people have been killed. Sopme positive effects are that The drought has been brocken and a really big dam has filled with loads of water.

Unfortunately the rain has fallen on the left side of the Great Dividing Range and most of the water will just go to dams and not on the other side of the Great Dividing Range and it will not drain into the murry darling river system.

Acid Ocean

Hear and there we all see ads advertising global warming. When we see the ads we pretty much just ignore it and keep watching. But what happens when it come true?? Scientists are worried that the global warming is causing carbon dioxide to get trapped under the ocean and causing the coral to fizz up and eventually die.

There is more carbon dioxide in the world now than there was in the 1960′s.Scientists believe that the carbon dioxide is coming from fossil fuels like petroleum and coal.

Carbon dioxide is having a mojor effect on the reefs. The carbon dioxide is killing the reefs and making them nowhere near as colourful as they used to be.Carbon dioxide is also affecting tourism aswell as coral and fish because when there aren’t any tourists the diving companies dont get any money.

In conclusion I believe that people should be more environmentaly smart, most people don’t really care about the environment and it is making the world deteriorate(not literally)

Orangutans

Orangutans are such lovely animals, but do we really no how they feel.People are cutting down trees to make palm oil, but by doing that they are also killing Orangutans.

In Borneo people are cutting down trees to make a living. The reason why these people are cutting the trees down is because of palm oil, the stuff in shampoo, cooking ingredients and lots of other products. If there are no trees, no job.

The downside of this is that the orangutans’ homes are being destroyed. In Borneo there are Orangutan day care centres for all the baby Orangutans that have been orphaned by the people cutting down their homes and killing their mums.

The only solution to this problem is to cut down only half the trees so that one half goes to the Orangutans and the other half gives the workers their jobs.

Black Saturday

On the 7th of Feb 2009,a devastating bush fire at King Lake swept uncontrollably through the area causing lots of people to lose homes, loved ones and pets.

I believe that all the bushfires are now finally under control and the death toll will stop plummeting higher and higher. The fire fighters have set up homes and shelters near big areas. Lots of people have thankfully donated lots of money. With the money the Prime Minister will give to these people to rebuild their homes.

I think that in the future people will rebuild their homes more stable and they might build a bunker that they can go to that is burn and fire proof. The weather  bureau might be able to send a warning if they sense there is a fire danger.
